We live in a deeply connected society where boring yourself with ânothing to doâ is almost impossible. Moments where you are genuinely left alone with your thoughts are extremely rare. When you donât know what to do, you open social media or access some entertainment. And itâs easy to bore yourself with such things. They kill time with ruthless efficiency. But worse, they kill your freely associations born out of sheer boredom.
When you go to a classical concert or to visit a gallery, you might find yourself thinking âwhat the hell am I doing here?â That usually happens to people who, like myself, have no deep knowledge of such subjects. Your mind starts wandering. You donât want to be seen with a phone in your hands in those places. But at the same time you donât want to bear with another symphony or abstract painting. That is prime time for thought. Itâs like taking a two hours long shower. You donât know what to do and you are stuck to confront your thoughts. Or maybe, itâs like having boring family, friends, relationships. Whenever someone is telling me a boring story, I ask general questions to keep them going and take refuge in my own thoughts. And thatâs where I found the gold nuggets to write of beautiful tales.
