Sure, you need to consider that Sometimes it's more of a distribution problem than a content problem, but, once you are in a good market like RoyalRoad, and you are passionate about it, chances are if you work hard enough, you have a good shot at making it. Hard work doesn't mean you are going to make it, obviously. But writing a lot, consistently, improving, learning how to manipulate your audience's feelings... it all goes a long a way toward making you a successful writer.
But, if you do not enjoy writing - or even if you stop enjoying writing along the way - there's a chance that you might no be able to write well anymore. Once we stop enjoying what we do, we zone out, we work like drones repeating a menial task. But, with all the due respect for floor cleaners, writing has more variables involved than just sweeping and mopping the floor. And if you don't think hard enough, you won't be able to create the connections and narratives needed to make a story succeed.
I am firmly against Toxic Positivity in Writing and being too nice to people, especially when they are doing something like writing. I do also believe that If you enjoy the process, results will follow. But enjoying the process doesn't mean that you just avoid the difficult questions. It means that you embrace them in your life and use them to course-correct your process. Often, people think that course-correcting is an unthinkable act against nature; that whatever you are doing, just keep going girl! Bleah. I'd be immensely surprised if anything coming out of an amateur writer is even remotely entertaining: that's why I'm often too blunt with feedback.
